Types of Loads

Point (Concentrated) Loads: These are the loads that act at a point. The loads that are applied on a floor by our feet can be assumed to be point loads; however, considering all the point loads from the occupants becomes very complex, and therefore we usually treat the occupancy loads as surface loads. Point loads generally refer to loads large magnitudes, such as the loads applied from the legs of large Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning equipment (HVAC), or loads on a beam which supports other beams, or loads applied from the purlins on a truss or a spatial structure. Point loads are measured in pounds (lb) or kips [ 1kip (k) =1,000 lb ].
